Ji Young Kim è un'artista coreana che esplora la relazione tra gioielleria contemporanea e oggetto attraverso strutture nascoste e forme cinetiche. La sua pratica è nata da una semplice osservazione linguistica: in coreano, l'atto di indossare gioielli è spesso espresso con i verbi "riempire" o "essere riempito" piuttosto che semplicemente "indossare". Questa intuizione l'ha portata a considerare i gioielli non solo come ornamenti, ma come atti di completamento di una relazione tra il corpo, l'oggetto e uno spazio invisibile.
Combinando tecniche tradizionali di lavorazione dei metalli con trattamenti superficiali sperimentali e meccanismi nascosti, crea oggetti indossabili che rivelano un'altra identità solo attraverso il tatto, il movimento e l'atto di indossarli.
Il suo lavoro recente indaga come il significato emerga attraverso l'attivazione, la trasformazione e il mutevole rapporto tra interno ed esterno, occultamento e rivelazione. Piuttosto che esistere come forma fissa, ogni opera rimane aperta a molteplici stati strutturali.
Ji Young Kim is a Korean artist exploring the relationship between contemporary jewellery and object through hidden structures and kinetic forms. Her practice began with a simple linguistic observation: in Korean, the act of wearing jewellery is often expressed through the verbs "to fill" or "to be filled" rather than simply "to wear". This insight led her to consider jewellery not merely as an ornament, but as an act of completing a relationship between the body, the object, and an unseen space.
Combining traditional metalsmithing techniques with experimental surface treatments and concealed mechanisms, she creates wearable objects that reveal another identity only through touch, movement, and the act of wearing.
Her recent work investigates how meaning emerges through activation, transformation, and the shifting relationship between interior and exterior, concealment and revelation. Rather than existing as a fixed form, each work remains open to multiple structural states.
