MIMMO JODICE
One of the main themes of Mimmo Jodice’s research on the cultural roots of the Mediterranean is the sea. Natural landscapes without any human presence take out any reference to time and places. The only elements are common objects like chairs, poles, the surface of a rock that emerges from the sea, that emphasized the feeling of waiting, made eternal by photography.

Uno dei principali temi della ricerca di Mimmo Jodice sulle radici culturali del Mediterraneo è il mare. Paesaggi naturali privi della presenza umana tolgono qualsiasi riferimento di tempo e luogo. Gli unici elementi presenti, spesso oggetti di uso comune, una sedia, un palo, uno scoglio che affiora dal mare, non fanno altro che accentuare il sentimento di attesa, che viene resa eterna dalla fotografia.
In 1985 Jodice began exploring Mediterranean antiquity. This strand of his research is subdivided into interconnected themes. Firstly, there are landscapes in which ancient ruins stand out. These are followed by the faces/bodies that correspond to sculptures, frescoes and mosaics.

Jodice avvia nel 1985 la sua ricerca sull’antichità mediterranea. Questa ricerca si suddivide in soggetti fra loro connessi. Innanzitutto i paesaggi, in cui campeggiano antiche rovine. Poi i volti/corpi corrispondenti alle sculture, affreschi, e mosaici.
These are hieratic figures, immobile and fascinating, testifying to Jodice’s particular sensitivity to the world of archaeology and to the people whose stories became the myths of the Mediterranean world.

Si tratta di figure ieratiche, affascinanti nella loro fissità e testimoni di quella sensibilità speciale per l’archeologia e i popoli che tanto hanno contribuito al mito del mondo Mediterraneo, che da sempre accompagna Jodice.
In the series Canova, Jodice observes the sculptures from every angles, revealing infinite expressive paths. In these works the artist sees and shows us the sculptor’s gesture and the sign of the chisel.

Nella serie Canova, Jodice osserva da ogni punto le sculture rivelandoci infiniti passaggi sensoriali ed espressivi. In queste opere Jodice vede e ci fa vedere il gesto dello scultore, l’impronta dello scalpello.
Mimmo Jodice was born in Naples in 1934. He spent a tough childhood during the War in Rione Sanità. Self-taught, he approached photography in the Sixties and as a reporter he fixed his lens to events such as the eartquakes of Gibellina in 1968 and the outbreak of cholera in Naples in 1973. Since the beginning he always wanted to stop the time, by creating memories of what was happening in the present.
His work is included in many istitutions worlwide.

Mimmo Jodice è nato a Napoli nel 1934. Ha trascorso un’infanzia dura durante la guerra al Rione Sanità. Da autodidatta scopre la fotografia negli anni ’60 e come reporter lega il suo obiettivo alle vicende umane come il terremoto di Gibellina del 1968 e lo scoppio del colera a Napoli nel 1973. Posando sempre lo sguardo per fermare il tempo. Fondandosi sulla memoria di ciò che è accaduto.
Le sue opere sono presenti nelle collezioni dei musei più importanti al mondo.
