Francesca Antonini Arte Contemporanea is pleased to present Dopo le sei di sera.

Drifts of Magic Realism, a group exhibition curated by Gaia Bobò, featuring works by Alessia Armeni, Anne Buckwalter, Dario Carratta, Ruoxi Jin, and Luca Rubegni.

The exhibition explores the persistence of certain aesthetic trajectories of Magic Realism within contemporary artistic practice. Its aim is not to impose a direct lineage, but rather to suggest transversal “drifts”: each work develops a language, evokes an atmosphere and imagines how a “magical” presence can be conceived within everyday life. In a reverberation of nocturnal tones, the dimension of dream becomes the artists’ privileged lens, expressed through the association of distant objects, strategies of escape and the metaphysical suspension of atmospheres.

Drawing on the definition of Franz Roh, the movement’s first theorist, the exhibition traces that form of “mystery [which] does not enter the represented world, but rather conceals itself behind it.” Moving beyond any prescriptive notion of stylistic coherence, the project instead explores new meanings this mystery can take on in contemporary life.

The exhibition brings together emerging and mid-career artists from the Italian and international scene. From the silent architectures of Alessia Armeni to the subtle perversity of Anne Buckwalter’s interiors, the exhibition unfolds in the tension between the unspoken and the unseen. Between the unsettling visions of Dario Carratta and the crystalline, enigmatic painting of Luca Rubegni, the juxtaposition of seemingly distant visual languages produces a sense of disorientation that also reverberates in the sculptures and site-specific installation by Ruoxi Jin.
