Structure No. 3, Baptiste Martin, 2025

Structure No. 3 is a minimal abstract work created in 2025. Characterized by a rigorous, geometric aesthetic, the piece unfolds through the juxtaposition of two neutral tones: a warm beige for the vertical rectangle on the left and a sandy ivory for the rest of the surface. The composition is defined by a thin horizontal and vertical line that suggest a division of space, evoking an architectural exploration of void and form. The material textures of the surface add depth and tactility to the monochromatic field, striking a balance between abstraction and substance.

In greater detail, the surface of the warm beige rectangle reveals a dense, stratified texture, the result of successive layers of gesso and natural pigments. This treatment generates a subtly abrasive finish, which lends a tactile presence to the painted field. The material appears to emerge from the canvas like a gentle bas-relief, amplifying the work’s spatial depth despite its chromatic restraint. The fine vertical line that bisects the rectangle is rendered with a controlled, assertive gesture — slightly incised into the surface — evoking the idea of an architectural threshold. This incision articulates the visual plane and introduces a quiet tension, underpinning the composition with a sense of formal discipline.
